Biografia
Nato a Roma il 29 novembre 1962
Laureato in Fisica cum laude all’Università di Roma “Tor Vergata”.
Dottore di Ricerca in Astronomia.
Dal 1993, Ricercatore Astronomo presso l’Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma.
Dal 2004, Astronomo Associato presso l’Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma.
Nel 2014, conseguisce l’idoneita’ per la qualifica di Professore Ordinario del comparto Astronomia e Astrofisica (FIS/05)
2016oggi Dirigente di RIcerca presso INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma.
Attività scientifica
Sono autore di oltre 240 pubblicazioni scientifiche internazionali.
Ad oggi, il mio fattore di impatto h-index e’ pari a 52 (fonte: VIA-Academy).
Ho una continua attività di seminari e lezioni presso Istituzioni italiane ed estere.
Sono referee delle più importanti riviste internazionali.
- Galassie nell’Universo giovane
Il mio campo di ricerca è la Cosmologia Osservativa, che ha lo scopo di studiare come le stelle e le galassie si siano formate nelle prime fasi della storia dell’Universo. A questo scopo, coordino da anni un gruppo di ricerca presso l’Osservatorio di Roma che, all’interno di una vasta collaborazione internazionale, utilizza i più avanzati satelliti (HST, Spitzer) e telescopi da terra (VLT, LBT) per osservare e studiare le galassie e le strutture cosmiche più remote.
I principali risultati ottenuti sono la scoperta e lo studio della galassie più lontana mai osservate (dal 1995, vedi Nature-News & Views, 1996, Science 29/9/1995, fino al 2011) e la ricostruzione della storia di formazione delle massa delle galassie giganti, negli anni 2003-2011.
Grazie a queste ricerche sono considerato uno dei “key player” a livello internazionale nello studio delle galassie nell’universo giovane.
Una parte importante della mia attività scientifica è stata svolta in collaborazione con lo European Southern Observatory (ESO), l’istituto di ricerca inter-governamentale europeo per l’astronomia, presso cui ha lavorato per lunghi periodi con diversi incarichi.
Sono stato Principal Investigator di molte proposte osservative accettate ad ESO, HST e altri grandi telescopi.
In particolare sono uno dei principali proponenti del programma CANDELS, il piu’ grande progetto mai eseguito dall’Hubble Space Telescope. Iniziato nel 2010, questo programma triennale sta fornendo i migliori dati mai raccolti sulle galassie primordiali utilizzando la nuova strumentazione appena installata su HST.
Sono Principal Investigator di due Large Programme ESO dedicati allo studio delle galassie nell’Universo giovane, il secondo dei quali (attualmente in corso) rappresenta il contributo europeo alla survey CANDELS.
- Database e sviluppo di software astronomico
Parte della mia attività è rivolta alla realizzazione e gestione di database e centri dati astronomici, che sono parte integrante del lavoro di ricerca. Le attivita’ di management collegate ai centri dati sono descritte in seguito.
Dal punto di vista della ricerca, ho iniziato sviluppando software per l’analisi dei dati spettrali (FITLYMAN) che è stato adottato e tuttora distribuito dall’ESO con il package Midas.
Ho sviluppato tecniche di Data Grid, e di analisi automatica dei dati astronomici da spazio e da terra.
Grazie a tali esperienze, sono oggi Lead Europeo di una Organizational Unit (OU) del Ground Data Segment di EUCLID, una futura missione ESA che è stata proposta nell’ambito del programma Science Vision e di cui è in corso la fase B.
Attività istituzionali
Nel corso della mia attività ho svolto numerosi incarichi istituzionali, sia direttivi che di rappresentanza, in organismi nazionali ed internazionali.
In anni recenti i principali sono stati:
- Partecipazioni a team e commissioni presso l’ESO.
In particolare:

- Nel 1998, ho fatto parte del team che ha fatto le osservazioni con il primo telescopio VLT;

- Dal 2004 al 2007 sono stato Chairman dell'Instrument Science Team per lo strumento VLT Hawk-I

- Dal 2008 al 2009 sono stato Chair del Panel di Cosmologia dell’Observing Program Committee.
- ASTRONET
ASTRONET e’ una “coordination activity” iniziata nel VI Programma Quadro E.U. e continuata nel VII che coordina le attività di tutte le agenzie di finanziamento della ricerca astrofisica in Europa. Ho avuto sin dall’inizio il ruolo formale di rappresentante italiano nell’Executive Committe, e “deputy” nel Board di ASTRONET.
Per ASTRONET, ha coordinato la redazione del rapporto sul management della astronomia a livello europeo (http://www.astronet-eu.org/) che descrive e confronta le strutture organizzative della ricerca astronomica nei principali paesi europei. Questa esperienza mi ha consentito di acquisire una visione dettagliata dei meccanismi decisionali ed organizzativi della ricerca in europa, e diversi contatti con i rappresentanti delle varie agenzie dei paesi EU.

- Consiglio Scientifico INAF
L’incarico più rilevante è stato quello relativo alla partecipazione al primo Consiglio Scientifico dell’INAF (2006-2008), di cui sono stato Presidente. Sotto il mio coordinamento, il Consiglio Scientifico dell’INAF ha redatto il primo Piano a Lungo Termine dell’astronomia italiana (http://www.inaf.it/struttura-organizzativa/cs/plt/inaf-long-term-plan.). Questo documento presenta una visione unificata dell’astrofisica moderna e identifica le principali priorità in cui l’INAF deve investire nel prossimo futuro.
- Board del Large Binocular Telescope
Dal 2009 sono uno dei 3 membri italiani del Board del Large Binocular Telescope, il più grande telescopio ottico del mondo, di cui l’Italia possiede il 25%. Nel 2010 sono stato nominato Chair di tale Board a partire dal secondo semestre 2011.

Attività manageriali

- Responsabile delle attività INAF presso ASDC
ASDC e’ il centro dati dell’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana. Dal 2005 al 2007 sono stato Responsabile del personale INAF in servizio presso ASDC. In questa veste ho organizzato il lavoro di 15 unità di personale impegnate nell’analisi e nella gestione dei dati di missione presso ASDC.
- Membro del Board di ASDC
Dal 2008 sono membro (per conto INAF) del Board di ASDC, l’organismo paritetico ASI-INAF di controllo e supervisione delle attività del centro stesso.
- Responsabile del Centro dati LBT
Dal 2008 INAF ha stabilito un centro dati per l’analisi e l’archiviazione dei dati scientifici del Large Binocular Telescope, Il centro dati è stato stabilito presso l’Osservatorio di Roma e io ne sono il responsabile dal momento della sua costituzione.
- Responsabile del Centro di Coordinamento Italiano per LBT
Dal 2009 INAF ha stabilito presso l’Osservatorio di Roma un centro per il coordinamento di tutte le attività italiane legate ad LBT. Io dirigo questo centro di coordinamento, avvalendomi di un gruppo di circa 10 unità di personale che eseguono le osservazioni al telescopio e lo sviluppo di strumentazione.

Didattica e divulgazione
Sono da sempre attento alle attività di divulgazione e di didattica.
Dal punto di vista didattico, ho tenuto alcuni moduli a corsi di dottorato e di laurea nelle Universita’ di Roma.
Dal 2010, sono Professore Incaricato presso l’Università La Spienza di Roma, dove sono titolare del corso di Astrofisica Extragalattica per la laurea Magistrale in Astronomia ed Astrofisica.
