Professor Gabriela Mazzanti received a degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology (1974) and in Pharmacy (1976), both cum laude, from Sapienza-University of Roma. She was Assistant Professor (1981-1992), and Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy (1992-2005). In 2005 she was appointed as Full Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the Sapienza-University of Rome. Since 1974, Prof. Mazzanti was involved in teaching, seminars and exercitations on Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy, for students of the degree courses in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Sciences and Technologies of herbal products, Scientific Information on drugs. She is also teacher in the Master of Phytotherapy of the School of Pharmacy and Medicine of Sapienza University of Rome. Within these degree courses she supervised Post-doctoral fellows, PhD students and students.
Main honour and tasks of Prof. Mazzanti include: Member Expert on Pharmacognosy of the permanent board for the revision and publication of the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia (1986-2000); member expert in the National Committee of Bioethics (1994-5); member expert on medicinal plants at the European Medicines Agency (2005); President of Italian Society of Pharmacognosy (2007-2009); Vice-president of the International Boureau of the Pharmaceutical Society of the Latin Mediterranean (since 2014); Supervisor of animal care at the Dept. of Physiology and Pharmacology V. Erspamer (2008-2014); Coordinator of the Working Group of Pharmacognosy and Phytotherapy of the Italian Society of Pharmacology (since 2011); Member of Scientific Committee of the Italian Surveillance System of Natural Health coordinated by the Italian National Institute of Health (since 2002).
Research activity of Prof. Mazzanti took place, and still takes place, in the field of natural substances and their preparations, particularly as regards their biological effects and safety. Main grant awards include: Non conventional Therapies. Analysis of the main toxicological problems regarding non conventional preparations (Chinese medicinal plants, ayurvedic preparations) (1999-2001: founded by the Italian Ministry of Health); Herbal substances potentially interesting for superficial and cutaneous mycoses: antimicrobial activity and mechanisms of action , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2000-02: project manager); Surveillance on adverse events from herbal products , founded by Italian National Institute of Health (2002-04); Pharmacological properties and safety of herbal preparations and their chemical constituents , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2003-05: project manager); Toxicological studies on preparations from medicinal plants and their constituents, mainly concerning their hepatotoxic effects , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2007-08: project manager); Surveillance on adverse events from natural products and dietary supplements , founded by the Italian National Institute of Health (2007-08: superintendent of operating unit); Safety of herbal drugs: pharmaco-toxicological studies and surveillance on their adverse effects, founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2009: project manager); Assessing the safety of natural products by a metabolomic approach , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2011: project manager); Natural products used in the weight control: safety assessment by a metabolomic study [C26A128C78], founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2012: project manager); Natural substances for preventing DNA-damage by tobacco smoke , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2012); Caralluma fimbriata, un nuovo "dimagrante naturale": caratterizzazione farmaco-tossicologica , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2014); "Evaluation of the chemopreventive effects of beta-caryophyllene in a rat model of epatocellular carcinoma", founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2015); Chemopreventive effects of natural sesquiterpenes against the cigarette smoke-induced airway damage and inflammation , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2016: project manager); Natural sesquiterpenes in the chemoprevention of biochemical and epigenetic airway changes induced by tobacco smoke exposure , founded by Sapienza University of Rome (2017); Monitoring use and safety of natural products and galenic preparations based on plant extracts for weight loss: pilot project of Lazio region. Prof. Mazzanti is Author of more than 150 papers, published mostly in peer reviewed journals.
