Marco Artico, Ph.D., M.D., Pharm. D.,
Neurosurgeon, Clinical Pathologist

Prof. Artico Marco was born in Rome.

Education and Training

He graduated magna cum laude in Medicine and Surgery on July 9th, 1986 at the School of Medicine and Surgery, Sapienza University of Rome.
From 1986 to 1991 he undertook the postgraduate training in Neurosurgery at Sapienza University of Rome (Program Director: Prof. A. Fortuna) and he graduated as Neurosurgeon on June 12th 1991, magna cum laude.
He graduated magna cum laude in Pharmacy on March 21th, 1995 at the School of Pharmacy, Sapienza University of Rome.
From 2009 to 2014 he undertook postgraduate training in Clinical Pathology at Sapienza University of Rome (Program Director: Prof. A. Santoni) and he graduated as Clinical Pathologist on June 25th 2014, magna cum laude.
Prof. Artico has followed his PhD training at the RUG University of GRONINGEN, PhD in Medische Wetenschappen (Medical Sciences) and, on October 31th 2016, he obtained his PhD after the programmed defence.

12/2/1992: Assistant Professor of Human Anatomy at the School of Pharmacy, Sapienza University of Rome.

1/6/2010: Winner of a public selection for Full Professorship in Human Anatomy, School of Medicine and Surgery, Modena and Reggio Emilia University, Italy.
21/09/2010-present: Full Professor in Human Anatomy - Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Sensory Organs, Sapienza University of Rome.
2/2/2015: ASN (National Scientific Enabling 2013 - Italy) for Full Professorship in Human Anatomy.

The scientific activity of Prof. Artico was devoted to the following main scientific topics: 1) Clinical anatomy of the glossopharingeal nerve; 2) Anatomical variations of the portal system in man and laboratory animals; 3) Anatomical variations of the human median nerve at wrist; 4) Relationships between catecholaminergic nerve fibers and mast cells in the dura mater and pleura of the rat; 5) Catecholaminergic innervation of human and rodent's dura mater; 6) Catecholaminergic corneal innervation in the rabbit; 7) Enzymatic activities in the uveo-scleral tissues of the dog; 8) Ultrastructural observations on chromatin and Cbeta-phospholipases; 9)Cholinergic, adrenergic and gaba-ergic innervation of human and rat's thymus without and after immune stimulation; 10) Topographical findings on the anatomy of the orbital region with particular reference to a new technical approach to the optic nerve and the orbital apex; 11) Neurotrophins and their receptors in human normal and pathological tissues; 12) Growth factors and Cytokines in human normal and pathological tissues.
