He directed the Department of Philosophical and Epistemological Studies (from November 1, 2006 to June 30, 2010) and, from 2010 to 2018, has directed the Department of Philosophy. He has been member of the Board of the Italian Association of Political Philosophy, and from October 2013 to October 2019 he has been the President of said Association. He is editor in chief of the journal "Politics and Society", published by Il Mulino. He is a member of the Faculty Council. He has been responsible of several Prin Research Units. He is author of about 220 publications. Many of his articles have appeared in English, French, German and Spanish. The primary object of his research has been the critical theory of society of the Frankfurt School. To the thought of Adorno and Horkheimer Petrucciani has dedicated a volume in 1984 (Ragione e dominio, Roma 1984) and numerous studies in the following years. In more recent times, he edited several editions of Adorno's texts (Contro l'antisemitismo, 1994; Il concetto di filosofia, 1999; Interpretazione dell'Odissea, 2000; the new edition of Dialettica negativa, Einaudi, Torino 2004; the course Metafisica. Concept and problems and the new edition of Terminologia filosofica, both published by Einaudi). In 2007 he published the volume Introduction to Adorno (Laterza, Rome-Bari 2007). Later Petrucciani studied the developments of the critical theory of society in the direction of an ethics of discourse and a theory of deliberative democracy: he published a volume on the thought of Karl-Otto Apel (Etica dell'argomentazione, Genoa 1988) and one on the theory of Habermas (Introduzione a Habermas, Rome 2000). In his writings, moreover, Petrucciani has touched on many themes of the contemporary philosophical-political debate, trying to contribute to the analysis of political concepts such as freedom, democracy, socialism, communitarianism and others (see the volume Modelli di filosofia politica, Einaudi, Turin 2003, Spanish translation 2008; in progress in Brazil). In addition, Petrucciani has devoted numerous studies to the debate around the thought of Marx, and its presence in the contemporary discussion (see Marx in America, with F. S. Trincia, Editori Riuniti, Rome 992). He is part of the direction of the magazines: "La cultura", "Parole chiave", "Critica marxista" and he is the Italian correspondent of the magazine "Actuel-Marx" (Paris, Presses Universitaires de France). he is a member of the scientific committee of the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci.
