Guido Colasurdo was born in Reggio Calabria (Italy) on July 21, 1948. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering cum laude at Politecnico di Torino in 1972.
Since 2007 he is Full Professor of Flight Mechanics at Università di Roma Sapienza .
He had previously worked at Politecnico di Torino, as:
- Assistant Professor (1973-1982)
- Associate Professor of Rocket Engines (1982-1994)
- Full Professor of Aerospace Propulsion (1994-2007)
His research activities concerned initially reciprocating engines, and, soon after, numerical fluid dynamics in propulsion systems. After becoming professor of rocket engines, his interest moved to rocket propulsion, namely engine performance and trajectory optimization for spacecraft and launchers; the latter gradually became the main topic of his research activities.
His team won the 2nd Global Trajectory Optimization Competion (2006) and ranked 2nd behind JPL in GTOC5 (2010).
Guido Colasurdo is author or coauthor of more than 100 papers, published for instance on Acta Astronautica, AIAA Journal, Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy, J. of Astronautical Sciences, J. of Guidance Control and Dynamics, J. of Propulsion and Power, J. of Spacecraft and Rockets, Planetary and Space Science.
Guido Colasurdo is Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Member of the American Astronautical Society (AAS), Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society (BIS). He was in the Astrodynamics Technical Committee of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) and has been Chairman of the Optimization Session of the IAF Astrodynamics Symposium. In the last years he acts frequently as Reviewer for J. of Spacecraft and Rockets and J. of Guidance Control and Dynamics; he has been International Adviser of the latter.
