Research activity: The research work was initially aimed at the synthesis and study of new porphyrin and metalloporphyrin derivatives, as catalysts of oxidation reactions of alkyl, olefinic and aromatic substrates. His interest was also directed to the synthesis and study of supramolecular diporphyrinic systems in order to create biomimetic catalytic systems. This work concerned in particular the study of the interaction between porphyrins and chiral surfactants, such as liposomes and micelles, for the construction of biomimetic systems of Cytochrome P450.
His interest is currently directed, in close collaboration with Prof. Roberto Paolesse and Prof. Mariano Venanzi of the Tor Vergata University of Rome, to the synthesis and study of new porphyrin systems, characterized by the presence of chiral functions, as residues conformationally blocked amino acids (D- and L-proline). In particular, the characteristics of self-aggregation, in solution and in solid phase, have been studied, highlighting the important correlations between structural characteristics (morphology) and properties (supramolecular chirality) of the macroscopic systems obtained. The stereospecific formation of these structures has been shown to depend not only on the reading of the chiral information present on the macrocycle, but also on the conditions of self-assembly, such as concentration and nature of the reaction medium. This has led to the possibility of fine-tuning the chemical-physical and morphological properties of the structures obtained. The application of these systems in the field of new materials, nanotechnologies and in the sensor field makes the study of these systems particularly important and interesting.
As part of his interest in supramolecular chemistry, he carried out periods of study and research at the laboratories of Professor David Reinhoudt, Director of the Supramolecular Chemistry Laboratory (MESA +) of the University of Twente, Enschede (NL). For this purpose he has benefited from some funding under the Short Term Mobility Programs, and Bilateral Agreements Programs of the National Research Council (various periods, 1997 and 1998).
Dr. Donato Monti also actively collaborated with Prof. Pavel Drasar of the Institute of Chemical Technology of the University of Prague, as part of a NATO bilateral exchange project (ESC (SPS) (2011) 0136 CBP.EAP. CLG.982972), concerning the synthesis and study of porphyrin derivatives functionalized with stereoid and saccharide residues, for the development of new materials.
His research work is documented by more than 90 printed publications in international chemistry journals and series, some of which have been cited in the fundamental text of Inorganic Chemistry F.A. Cotton, G. Wilkinson, C.A. Murrillo, M. Bochmann, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry VI Ed. Chapter 21. Wiley-Interscience Publ., New York, 1999 (Publications: 74-76).
He is also the author or co-author of five chapters in volume. It has an h-index = 28, and more than 2400 citations to date.
He has also participated in numerous national and international chemistry conferences, with oral and poster presentations. He was a member of the organizing committee of the ICPP-4: Fourth International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, Rome, Italy, July 2006. In some of them he also played the role of "Chairman" in some sessions (ICPP-4: Fourth International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, Rome, Italy, July 2006; ICPP-5: Fifth International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, Moscow, CSI, July 2008). He was also "Invited Speaker" at the recent ICPP-10 international conference, Munich, July 2018. A detailed list of participations as shown below.
