Luigi Stella ha svolto le sue ricerche per nove anni negli Stati Uniti, in Germania e nei Paesi Bassi; successivamente a Milano dove ha insegnato presso l'Universita' Statale. Dal 1996 e Astronomo Ordinario presso l Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma; insegna attualmente Astrofisica delle Alte Energie presso il Dipartimento di Fisica dell Universita di Roma La Sapienza . E tra i curatori scientifici dell Astrophysical Journal (American Astronomical Society). I suoi interessi scientifici principali sono nell'ambito dell'astrofisica relativistica e riguardano le stelle di neutroni, i buchi neri e le onde gravitazionali, argomenti sui quali ha pubblicato oltre 400 articoli in riviste internazionali di fisica ed astrofisica (si veda il link qui in basso). Nel 2000 ha ricevuto il premio SIGRAV per la Relativita Sperimentale e l Astrofisica Osservativa. Dal 2006 e nella lista Highly cited Researchers dei ricercatori di maggior impatto al mondo, compilata da Thomson Reuters-Clarivate Analytics. Nel 2013 Il presidente Napolitano lo nomina Commendatore per meriti scientifici.

Luigi Stella carried out his research work for nine years in the USA, Germany and the Netherlands, before holding an associate professorship in Milan. Since 1996 he works at the Astronomical Observatory of Rome in a senior astronomer and full professor capacity and teaches High Energy Astrophysics at the University of Rome ``La Sapienza . He was awarded the SIGRAV Price for Experimental Relativity and Observational Astrophysics in the year 2000. Since 2003 he is a scientific editor of the Astrophysical Journal and the American Astronomical Society. His main scientific interests lie in relativistic astrophysics and the study of neutron stars and black holes both from the observational and theoretical points of view. He has worked also on gamma ray bursts, magnetars and gravitational waves. He has published over 400 papers in refereed journals (see link below); since 2006 he is listed among the Highly-Cited Researchers in the field of Space Sciences Thomson Reuters-Clarivate Analytics. In 2013 President Napolitano appointed him Commander (OMRI) for scientific merits.
