Sabina Bigi is associate professor in structural geology and tectonics (GEO/03) at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Roma "La Sapienza" where she currently teaches the courses Seismic interpretation and 3D modelling and CO2 Geological Storage.
She is the head of the Tectonics and Fluid Chemistry Lab of the Earth Science Department where coordinates a group of researchers having a great experience in geochemical, structural geology and social science (http://www.dst.uniroma1.it/structures/laboratories/tectonics-and-fluid-c... ). In 2017 she obtained the national scientific qualification full professor, in the sector 04-A2. She is fellow of the Geological Society of Italy, of the American Geophysical Union and of the Geological Society of America, and of the European association of geoscientists and engineers (EAGE). Since 2014, she is deeply involved in research coordination on geological storage of CO2, as member of the Executive Committee of CO2Geonet (http://www.co2geonet.com/), EERA (European Energy Research Alliance) and ENERG (http://www.energnet.eu) as representative of Sapienza University.
Teaching experience - Her teaching experience consists of courses of Seismic Interpretation since four AA (academic years), Geological Storage (since 4 AA), Structural Geology (for 11 AA), Geology (5 AA), Field Geological (Mapping) (5 AA), Brittle Structural Geology (11 AA), Tectonics and Geodynamics (5 AA) in the Earth Science Department, University of Rome La Sapienza, from 1990 to the present. She has been the supervisor of 6 PhD students. She is also Scientific Responsible and Administrative Coordinator for International Mobility for Earth and Science Department, Sapienza University. She taught in the international spring school of Latera (within the ENOS project, http://www.enos-project.eu/highlights/enos-spring-schools/enos-1st-sprin...) and in the Sulcis Summer school on 2018. She is the one of the promoters and teacher at the Scientific diving school of Panarea (2016-2018). She is the Director of the International Master on CO2Geological Storage organised by Sapienza and Zagreb Universities (https://web.uniroma1.it/masterco2/home).
Research topics - Her main research interest is focused on brittle deformation, and comprises the studies of faults and fractures network, with application in the field of hydrocarbons exploration and geothermal exploration, CO2 geological storage and applied geology. She has skills on field structural geology, field map geology, seismic interpretation, fracture modelling. Faults studies were dedicated to the reconstruction of fault architecture and evolution, with particular attention to gas bearing and active faults. Fractures network studies were focused on fractures characterization in carbonates and on development of new fracture models for fluid flow simulation. She dedicated more than a decade (1990 - 2005) to the study of the Apennines geological evolution and, more in general to thrust tectonics studies and the interplay between tectonics and sedimentation in contractional settings. In particular, she studied the influence of pre-existing structure on the geometries and kinematic of an evolving fold-and-thrust-belt, such as the Apennines, but she also worked on other thrust belt as the Zagros Mountains (Iran) and the Andes (Argentina). She has experiences in field map geology, having worked as field geologist for the Geological Survey of Italy, at the realization of the national geological maps (CARG Project), scale 1:50.000. She also improved geological mapping activities testing and applying GIS application.
From 2006 she was member of the Chemical Fluid Lab, where she can study the control exerted by faults and fractures on fluid circulation, and the application on geological storage of CO2. In the following years she dedicated to the studies on interaction between faults architectures and fluid migration in collaboration with the geochemical group of the TFC Lab. From 2013 to 2017 she worked on the geological and geochemical characterization for a demo site in the Sulcis basin (Sardinia), funded by Energy Ministry and Sardinia Region. These studies will be the base for the development of the still ongoing Sotacarbo fault Lab experiments (partly funded by the European project ENOS, partly by the Sardinia region http://www.enos-project.eu/sites/field-laboratories-for-leakage-simulati...).
Editorial activities She is editor of the Journal Pure and Applied Geophysics ; she was Guest Editor for the special volume The geology of Adriatic basin , n.42, Marine and Petroleum Geology.
Studied areas Dolomites (Eastern Alps), Apennines (Central, Northern, Southern), Zagros (Iran), Eastern Cordillera (NW Argentina), Tyrrhenian Sea, Aeolian and Pontine Islands.
