Andrea M. Isidori has dedicated his career to the research, diagnosis and treatment of patients with steroid hormone excess and deficiency, particularly androgen disorders (male hypogonadism) and glucocorticoid disorders (Cushing's syndrome and adrenal insufficiency). He started his clinical activity in neuroendocrinology at St. Bartholomew's Hospital (under the guidance of Prof. Michael Besser) and Queen Mary University of London (with Prof. Ashely Grossman). Then, he moved back to Italy to conduct research in andrology, starting a diagnostic unit where he developed morphofunctional studies on the male gonad. He is currently a Consultant Endocrinologist and the Head of the Unit for Advanced Endocrine Diagnostics in the 'Policlinico Umberto I Hospital in Rome. In 2019 he was appointed Full Professor of Endocrinology at the largest University Hospital in Italy, the Sapienza University of Rome. In addition, he has established independent collaborations with the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism and several other Universities, revealing how the pattern of changing glucocorticoid levels affects metabolism and the immune profile. Not only a physician but also a scientist, he has contributed to clarifying how fluxes of cyclic nucleotides (cGMP and cAMP), and the pharmacological modulation of the phosphodiesterases within endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes, shape beta-adrenergic signaling, influence the extracellular matrix, control inflammatory cells and influence development. He has published 270 original articles in prestigious journals (including Nature, Science Translational Medicine, The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Circulation, JACC, and others for a 2022 Impact factor >1344), collecting over 19836 citations and with a Hirsch H-index of 59 (Scopus; 73 G-Scholar). In the 2018, 2019 and 2021 rankings, he has been selected in the top 2% of scientists for the discipline by PLOS BIOLOGY. In 2023 he received the honorary fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.

Prof. Isidori's research career can be considered atypical, as he always has privileged interactions and cross-fertilization between different areas, merging clinical and basic research. His life has been spent physically and conceptually jumping from clinical practice to the laboratory and back, trying to address the unmet metabolic and cardiovascular needs of patients with steroid gland disorders. The community has recognized his contributions, and he has been elected to the Executive Committee of the European Academy (for two mandates, from 2014 to 2022) and to the European Neuroendocrine Association (from 2020 to 2024). Since 2022 is the President of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine. In January 2021, the University Rector nominated me as the Academic Delegate for the Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences.

Endocrinology is one of the few disciplines that allows physicians to challenge themselves in a truly holistic approach. Isidori has performed clinical research in nearly every area of endocrinology: andrology, cardiovascular endocrinology, diabetes, adrenal disorders, pituitary diseases, adolescence medicine and transition, sexual medicine and finally, rare endocrine diseases. "While less easily descriptive than a narrow field focussed career, this intense work has been essential for the ambitious organic approach to knowledge that I am now transferring to my fellows. The Endocrinology residency in my Unit is one of the most desired nationwide positions (and difficult to get in), because trainees know they will be seeing everything and learning how to perform and interpret tests and imaging in the most difficult endocrine cases". Prof. Isidori has trained several fellows in Academic Carrier: 9 have achieved academic and/or hospital positions in Sapienza and other prestigious sites. He currently supervises more than ten young collaborators in junior positions or Ph.D. programs; he has supervised over twenty MDs' theses. For his multidisciplinary approach, he has been appointed to several boards of prestigious non-profit organizations, including the Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR, IT), Italian National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems (ANVUR, IT), the Amicoandrologo Foundation (IT), the Parsemus Foundation (USA), the Novo Nordisk Foundation (DK), the Ministry of Education of Slovakian Republic (SK). He has been Associate Editor of the 'European Journal of Endocrinology' (2016-2022, Bioscentifica, UK) and Associate Editor of the 'Endocrine - Springer Nature' (2015-2019, USA).
