In the role of a researcher in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Prof. Leone Martellucci has done its research work in the field of Fluid Machinery and Energy Systems.
The research led to the drafting of 50 scientific papers presented and published in National Congresses (25) and international (25). Prof. Leone Martellucci has also collaborated with experimental activities and planning that led to the creation of several prototype vehicles with hybrid drive and conventional.
In the field of hybrid propulsion systems Prof. Leone Martellucci is involved from the outset of his research during the three years of doctoral research, as evidenced from the list of scientific publications that see the theme of this hybrid vehicles from 1993 to 2008.
The research activity in this field was initially characterized by an intense study from the general point of view of the various possible systems, supplemented by a detailed numerical simulation of behavior with tools specially developed by Prof. Leone Martellucci.
The studies carried out from 1993 to 1998 made it possible to investigate the energy analysis of the various components of hybrid systems, allowing you to evaluate the overall efficiency and pollutant emissions, thus leading comparison with conventional vehicles. These searches were conducted mostly working in MATLAB SIMULINK environment with computer codes developed specifically Prof. Leone Martellucci and its collaborators.
Since 1998, according to a research funding of the National Research Council, the research of Prof. Leone Martellucci in the field of hybrid propulsion systems have become purely experimental, allowing the verification and validation of what was done from 1993 to 1998.
The experimental work was carried out within the framework of the CNR Targeted Project II Transport in collaboration with Scuderia Bizzarrini and on behalf of the Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche , and covered the period between April 1997 and September 1998, Prof. Leone Martellucci has actively collaborated in the project definition of a car to drive a hybrid parallel four-wheel drive . Since November 1997, he was involved in the implementation and testing of the prototype.
Based on the experience gained and by obtaining research grants from the industrial world, Prof. Leone Martellucci, since 2000, has been responsible for the design of a new prototype developed based on previous experience and with hybrid engine with storage system supercapacitors. Of this second prototype Prof. Leone Martellucci is the full responsible and designer and performed the entire phase of mechanical, electrical and electronics, also coordinates the construction phase of the entire prototype, developed entirely within the university and without the use of external consultants or research centers. The project was funded at 90% with funds obtained from industry. This second prototype has allowed the implementation of what has been developed in the numerical simulation, leading to the realization of the entire control system of the hybrid powertrain. The prototype is fully functional and is used as a basis for experimenting with different logic for the management of the propulsion system and the storage system. Currently, the prototype has been requested by the ENEA Casaccia Centre to conduct a test campaign on track in collaboration with the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Energy Conversion, University "La Sapienza", which pertains Prof. Leone Martellucci.
The activities carried out in collaboration with ENEA has led Prof. Leone Martellucci to two research contracts for the development of light-duty vehicles for city use hybrid propulsion. The first project, which started in July 2006, and commissioned by ENEA in collaboration with the University of Roma Tre in 2008 led to the creation of a light quadricycle with a series hybrid propulsion.
In July 2008 he was instead the beginning of the research commissioned by ENEA always referred Prof. Leone Martellucci is full responsible; objective of the activity is the construction of a light microcar with parallel hybrid propulsion.
In January 2008, Prof. Leone Martellucci has been appointed head of the scientific department of the development prototypes Polo for Sustainable Mobility at the University La Sapienza and the Lazio Region. At the laboratories of the Pole for Sustainable Mobility of Cisterna di Latina are being developed various projects of vehicles with low environmental impact.

SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION
The research group coordinated by Prof. Leone Martellucci at Rome's La Sapienza CTL has participated in numerous research projects in collaboration with other research centers and private companies. Specifically, we report here the scientific collaborations that led to the creation of prototypes of cars with thermal propulsion, hybrid or electric.
