Master in Mediterranean Archaeology

Description

With the increasing availability of data and data repositories, archaeologists require techniques and methods that utilize information to gain new and deeper insights into archaeological problems. This entails being aware of the current available technical tools.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the principles of data analysis in archaeology. It would particularly benefit those who wish to have an introduction to techniques such as GIS, databases, and other analytical tools to facilitate their own research. Students will acquire the skills necessary for a complete workflow, from data acquisition through analysis and output generation. The areas covered include data formalization, database management and design, handling unstructured and structured data, and management and visualization of spatial data.

The course will be taught using a combination of lectures and practical sessions. Throughout, there is a strong focus on how such procedures might be applied to solve significant archaeological problems. Practical case studies will be used to address issues raised during lectures. Students will be required to create a final research project assignment that will emphasize a more elaborate application of the concepts taught during the course.

Given the course structure, it is essential to attend all the classes.

Lectures will take place in the Department of Humanities, Main Building, strating from Tuesday, February 26th, 2024.
