DI NEPI SERENA
(programma)
This course aims at discussing the most relevant developments and turning points in “Western” history from mid 15th century to the French Revolution from the perspective of Fashion history. We will focus on traditional Early Modern Historiographical categories, spaces and chronologies by working in parallel on two different paths: on the one hand, we will present events on a chronological order; on the other one, we will put them in a close dialogue with the histories of dressing, clothing, consumption and fashion. We will question: the Renaissance; geographical “discoveries” and the building of Iberian Empires; the Italian Wars; Reformations; Wars of Religion and Continental Civil Wars; Christian-Islamic interactions; 18th century crisis; Politic, Economic and Cultural global challenges; Absolutist States and Mercantilist States ; English Revolutions; Scientific Revolution; Wars and the Balance of Power from within and without Europe; the Enlightenment; new models of production and the first industrialization; the Age of Revolutions, from American Independence to the French Revolution. In the second part of the course, students will present short essays on the topics of the course. Special attention will be devoted to Renaissance costume books such as the famous one by Cesare Vecellio (De gli habiti antichi et moderni di diverse parti del mondo, Venezia 1590).
